How to Get the Most Out of Your High School Experience

How to Get the Most Out of Your High School Experience You probably had some vision of what “high school” looked like when you were little, but actually being a student there is a whole different story. It can be weird, and even a little scary, to be in a place you’ve imagined countless times. Now that you’re walking through the hallways, seeing the posters on the wall, and putting your coat in your locker, you might find that high school isn’t turning out the way you thought it would. Though it may not be easy, high school is by no means impossible. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your experience. Try new things. High school is a terrific time to gain new experiences. Youll likely be required to take roughly the same classes as the rest of your classmates, but you can form your own experience in other ways. Trying out for a sport, joining a club, taking up a new hobby, and even taking the bus for the first time are all great experiences that you can take away from high school. Meet new people. Meeting new people in high school is inevitable. Between classmates, teachers, bus drivers, and even school nurses, you’re going to be interacting with people you didn’t even know existed before. There’s a lot of pressure to make an immediate, stable friend group in high school. As hard as it may be, try not to stress about this. Give friendships time and be open to everyone you meet. Things will work out one way or another. Some people will light up your day while being around others without tearing your hair out might be just about impossible. Whichever the case, you’ll learn more about yourself by meeting different kinds of people. Being able to work with anyone is an incredible skill that will serve you well in your life. You can use these opportunities to see the good in people, which will make life a whole lot easier for you. Get to know your counselor. If your school has a counselor or academic advisor, it’s a good idea to form a connection with them as soon as possible. Their job is to help students plan their future and guide them through any issues they’re having, so establishing a good relationship with them can be extremely helpful for you. Since they work at the school, they probably have some helpful insight into how the school works, too. It’s never too late to start a connection with your counselor, and it’s never too early, either. Keep going, even when you fall behind. High school can be pretty different from middle school. It’s not hard to stumble a little (or a lot) while you’re getting your footing in a new environment. If you fall behind (and you probably will at some point, because everyone does), remember this: keep going. It’s cliché but true that you should always try, try again (except if you’re trying to sneak in a herd of cows into the school … then maybe stop trying). If you find yourself struggling academically, be resourceful. Between teachers, your counselor, and fellow students, there are definitely people who can help you figure it out. It’s easy to think that some people are just naturally good at certain things, but a lot of success comes from hard work. Don’t let this stress you out, because everyone can work hard. That includes you. Be yourself. Being surrounded by so many people means that you’ll probably start comparing yourself to them. There’s always a pressure in high school to be “cool.” You might feel judged by how well you did on that test, how much you speak up in class, how many clubs you’re in, how many friends you have, how athletic you are, what you pack for lunch, what clothes you wear, etc. The list really does go on and on, and you probably have a few choice examples of your own to add. Remember, though, that none of these definitions for “cool” form a comprehensive depiction of who a person is. It’s like that old “tip of the iceberg” analogyâ€"what you see is only the surface of a person’s personality. There’s so much more underneath. You know who you are, and youd better believe that you’re great, because it’s true! Whatever happens, be the best version of yourself. It’s so much easier than trying to be someone you don’t like. Learn about who you are as a student. With all its craziness, high school offers a great environment for you to learn more about yourself as a student. Here’s a short exercise that might prompt you to think about who you are: Step 1 Start by making a list about what you like and dislike about school. You can jot down specific things like classes, teachers, or assignments, or something more general like the role of being a high school student. Depending on the day, one list might be longer than the other, but you can still use all your answers. Step 2 Now, pick a couple of the items on your list and ask yourselfwhyyou put them on there. Then ask yourselfwhyyou gave that answer, and keep repeating (the same method you might have used when you were little to torment grownups). For example, if you listed “art class” as one of the things you liked about school, ask yourself why you like it. Do you love what you’re learning? Do you love the way your teacher leads the class? What about that teaching style really works for you? Or do you love being around the people in this class? Or is the class just a nice break from an otherwise bummer schedule? For another example, maybe you listed “homework” as one of the things you disliked about high school. Try thinking about why you don’t like homework (besides the obvious answer: “WhywouldI like it?”) Do you feel like it’s not a good use of your time? Does it stress you out? Do you just have too much of it? Do you have too much of it because all of your teachers are evil, or does procrastination make it pile up into something much larger? It’s easy (and fun) to complain about high school woes, but you can make your complaints useful by thinking about your reasoning behind them. Who doesn’t want to gain more insight into themselves? One of the keys to success is learning to “begin with the end in mind.” You don’t need to have an exact plan now, but thinking about the big picture early on means that it’ll be easier to make a plan when you’re ready to take that next step. Be open to new things, work hard through your struggles, and keep an eye out for your strengths, especially those strengths unrelated to academics. This will prepare you for your post-graduation plans, whether they be college or any other adventure. And most important, remember to have fun! college prep resources high school Illinois Admissions We're here for you as you prepare for college. Aeneas, The Titular Hero Of Virgil s Aeneid - 1426 Words

Aeneas, the titular hero of Virgil’s Aeneid, is the flawed Trojan hero sent on a divine quest to found the new Troy and establish the basis for the Roman Empire. Along this journey, he is pushed to his limits both mentally and physically. This strain shows him to be a deeply Roman hero, especially in the values that come forward in his actions and response to tragedy. He embodies two major Roman values: pietas and respect for family, both past and future. One of the most important values that Aeneas embodies is pietas. Pietas is a nigh-untranslatable word that means great devotion and piety, the two words Lombardo uses most in his translation of the Aeneid to indicate this value. Randall Ganiban, in his introduction to the Aeneid states that â€Å"Aeneas is placed in such a difficult position because of his pietas – his duty towards his family, state, and the gods (Ganiban, p.15).† Aeneas struggles to balance his sense of duty towards all three and the fact that despite his immortal parentage, he is simply a human man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He possesses an almost supernatural sense of duty, which is why it is very strange that he finds some of his strongest opposition in the form of the divine. Juno, queen of the gods, violently opposes Aeneas’ quest for Rome. This is marked as strange by Virgil: â€Å"That she forced a man of faultless devotion / To endure so much hardship† (A en. 1.14-15, Lombardo). Aeneas is known throughout the land for his

The Love Of Our Lives - 1177 Words

Everyone thinks they are in love when they are in high school. We believe we have found the love of our lives even if it just our first boyfriend or girlfriend. I am a victim to this. I fell in love my freshman year. A wild, random love that shouldn t have even started. A hallway craziness, my friend s like to call it. This love story, if you can even call it that, is how I decided that never again, will I fall in love with a pyscho. Walking with my friend, Katy, to French class seemed so innocent. We were talking, laughing, and really riled up from the assembly we just left. Our school cheerleaders always made us laugh with their cheers that only about a third of the class would help them with. When I say yellow, you say blue!†¦show more content†¦You didn t see his ornery attitude or the bad things he does. You saw just utter sexiness when you saw Mike. He started talking to Katy, while I just listened to his bass tone voice. Mike noticed me not joining in the conversation and asked me why I never spoke up. I don’t talk much to people I don t know, I said, hoping to sound sauve but instead sounding shy. Then get to know me. Mike gave me his number and carried on his way. Katy winked at me as we entered our French class. Never in my life, had I been so happy to finish French and get home. As soon as French was over, I pulled out my cell-phone. I searched for Mike s name in my phone but didn t find it. Maybe I passed it, I thought as I slowly went down the list of contacts. I stopped, seeing a name I didn’t recognize. Laughing, I clicked on Badass and hoped it was Mike as I texted. I got a reply almost immediately and it was definitely him. We talked for a while and then I had a realization: I never told him my name. Curious, I typed Mike another message, quickly asking him what he saved me as in his phone. It s embarrassing, was his reply to me. I doubt that. Okay but don t think I m weird, okay, he questioned my promise not to laugh a couple times and a few minutes later I got the message that would change my entire view of my high school for the rest of my life: Future Girlfriend, Even after only knowing Mike for a few days, we started dating. He carried me

It has significantly impacted people’s lives that their ways of doing things as well as their means of doing things have already changed to conform to technological trends. Its powerful effect on almost every person’s life is remarkably manifested in the people’s enthusiastic acceptance and immersion to change brought about by technology. We will write a custom essay sample on A Technology of Life or any similar topic only for you Order Now Indeed, technology influences people’s mode of thinking, behaving, and doing things. It has also directly and indirectly shapes certain behavior patterns and values among people especially the young generation. It has even become a guide for social interaction and thus, has already become part of everybody’s every day life. The rapid technological change brings both desirable and undesirable changes in our culture. Technology development can only be viewed as a cultural progression if its desirable impact to the culture and society is capitalized. Further, technology is considered a cultural progression if changes brought about redound to the highest interest of an organization and to the society as a whole. It should not only create convenience but should facilitate optimum outcome and productivity of anything where technology is used or applied. S ome of the considerable beneficial effect of technology is it works to decrease business cost in the industry sector while, technology, particularly communication bridges the distance between individuals. Also, it must be noted that technology now promoted and encouraged continuous invention and innovation. However, one should always be reminded of the fact that too much of anything is dangerous, thus too much dependence to technology might also demean natural creativity and intelligence of people and foster a technology-dependent society. Technology has undeniably successfully change people’s values, beliefs, and ways of behaving which are aspects that reflect the culture of the new society. The unstoppable development in technology and its affordability has triggered a domino effect that has changed how people and society behaves. It has created a cultural change as people in today’s environment has no option to keep abreast with the modern world but to embrace technology and its resulting change, and learn to use and live with it. Technology provides people with the tool to deal and live with the demands of the changing environment especially the industrial world. It creates competitive advantage that in the corporate world â€Å"technology now is power† (Coon). It is a fact that this rapid technological change creates convenience among people even in industrial organizations.   According to Hannagan (1998), â€Å"the introduction of technology has speeded up global communication and made possible for information to be transmitted immediately†   (p. 602) facilitating immediate transaction. These developments have served to facilitate global business developments as well as individual relationship. In fact one of the most concrete examples of the beneficial use of technology to communication is well articulated in the statements of Davis and Meyer (1999) that â€Å"the development of mobile technologies have made connection available to anyone, anytime, and any place† (p. 9). Technology serves to speed up business and personal transactions maximizing productivity and usability of time. The communication revolution has a profound effect on the lives of people. This effect makes the new communication technology essential to people lives. To concretize this is to relate my experience with that of my mother when communication technology was not yet developed. During their time, distance can really create so much challenge as immediate communication was not available. However, in my time now, owning mobile phone is not a luxury but already a necessity. It helps one to receive important information immediately, facilitate immediate deals and decision making, communicate and â€Å"stay close† with the family and significant people, and socialize with friends. Its added attributes like calculator, calendar, camera and others can also help the owner or user in various ways making life easier and less complicated. Indeed, technology has really provided practicality and convenience to its user and to the modern society. Reference List Coon, D. Technology’s positive effect on culture, class, and gender. Parasitic Wasps Essays (5674 words) - Biomolecules, Nutrition

Parasitic Wasps Introduction Malaria is one of the most prevalent and dangerous diseases known to man. It has existed for centuries and affects a myriad of people in the tropical region. Even today, with our newly discovered treatments for many of the tropical diseases, over 10% of the people that are infected with malaria each year and do not receive proper treatment die. In Africa alone, over 1 million children die each year because of malaria and new cases are reported frequently. Malaria is very dangerous and harmful to man. However, the protozoan that causes malaria has existed since man came into being. Fossils of mosquitoes that are 30 million years old contain the vector for malaria. After written history, many civilisations have known about malaria. The Greek physician Hippocrates described the symptoms of malaria in the 5th Century BC The name malaria is derived from the Italian words, mal and aria, meaning bad air, because people of earlier times believed that the disease was caused by polluted air near swaps and wetlands in Europe. The scientific identification of malaria was not found until 1880. The French army physician, Charles Laveran, while stationed in Algeria, noticed strange shapes of red blood cells in certain patients and identified the disease scientifically and linked to a certain protozoan. Although the disease had been identified, it was not until 1897, when British army physician, Ronald Ross studied birds and discovered that the malarial protozoan was transmitted through mosquito es. Soon after, two Italian scientists noted that mosquitoes spread malaria to humans as well. Many attempts have been made to try to eradicate the disease. As early as 7 AD, in Rome, swamps were drained to try to prevent the bad air from reaching nearby cities. Recently, in the 1950's and 1960's, about 25 years after the development of DDT, the United Nations World Health Organisation tried to wipe out the disease through the use of DDT. Although, the number of cases was reduces in many areas, they started again. Scientists today believe that malaria can never be eradicated due to the fact that the protozoan can manipulate easily and become resistant to a drug that is overused. The mosquitoes that spread malaria are also becoming resistant to insecticides. Malaria can be treated on an individual basis and treatments and medicines can be used. To understand these treatments however, one must understand what happens to a malarial protozoan. The disease, malaria, is cause by the protozoan, Plasmodium, which lives in tropical regions all around the world. There are only four species of this protozoan that cause malaria in humans, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium falciparum. These protozoans are spread from infected to healthy people through the bite of the Anopheles mosquito, blood transfusions, or through hypodermic injections. This makes malaria one of the most easily communicable diseases in the world. 1.Sporozoites in salivary gland. 2.O?cysts in stomach wall. 3.Male and female gametocytes. 4.Liver phase. 5.Release of merozoites from liver. These enter red cells where both sexual and asexual cycles continue. Malaria is spread only through the females of the 60 different types of the Anopheles mosquito, as the males do not feed on blood. The symptoms of this disease are many, however a physician must be consulted to avoid risk to a person. To treat malaria, many drugs are used today. Forms of these drugs date back to the 1500's and 1600's. Physicians diagnose malaria by identifying Plasmodia in a patient's body. Once identified, malaria can be treated with chloroquine and primaquine. Since some forms of Plasmodia falciparum have become resistant to these, quinine, mefloquine, or halofautrine are used. Almost all of the cases of malaria can be treated if done in the proper way. However, to suffer the pain and illness of malaria, people can use many preventive measures. All swampy areas must be avoided as well as tropical water that may be contaminated or local food. People should just protect themselves from mosquitoes and risk of infection will be tremendously lowered. This can be done by impregnated bednets. These involve surrounding the bed with a curtain that is sprayed with certain compounds. These are normally pyrethroids or organophosphates, which create an effective barrier between the mosquito and its blood mea l.

He was later identified through his military fingerprint. The Army veteran was charged with racketeering, money laundering, records tampering, theft and identity theft. John Cody claimed he was a Navvy officer, and swindled the United States Navvy Veterans Association, a charity he ran from Tampa, Florida for more than 100 million. Authorities believe the defendant defrauded donors of up to $100 million in 41 states ince 2001, including $2 million in Ohio, on the appearance of helping Navvy veterans. Records show the defendant had showered politicians with political donations . This past Tuesday the Jury reached a verdict of guilty. The duties of the forensics accountant were to investigate the charity and trace by the fund that was donated to see how and where it was used. This case is known for one of the first FEMA fraud cases which came in 2005 the defendant, Daniel Bellegarde, a resident of Homestead, Florida allegedly deceived the Federal Emergency Management Agency of more than $11,000. Bellegarde allegedly filed false claims with FEMA saying that his home and furnishings were damaged by flood waters contaminated by raw sewage. He was among 14 people accused of receiving disaster relief fraud. He was charged with mail fraud, wire fraud and making a false claim, which can land him behind bar for 20 years. Even though Dade County experienced no hurricane conditions when Frances hit land in Martin County, FEMA gave out more than $31 million to almost 13,000 Miami-Dade residents. In total, the indictments allege about $1 50,000 in fraudulent FEMA payments . Bellegarde applied for FEMA funds on Oct. , about a month after Frances brushed by Miami-Dade County causing little damage. A few days later Bellegarde called FEMA; his home was inspected and received a check for $11,198. 90. Later, the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, began asking questions. Inspectors found no evidence that Bellegardes home had been damaged by the storm, the prosecutor said . Bellegardes little knowledge of English is one of several key issues under dispute in the case. Because his first language is creole the paperwork that he received was written in English and Spanish. They became suspicious of Bellegardes claim of the flooding in the house when they did not notice any stains or water damage in the home. According to the landlord he was never contacted about any complaints of sewage backups or storm damage from the defendant. Late that week he was found not guilty the seven men and five women on the Jury agreed that the government did not prove its case. The importance ofa forensic accountant in this case, were the amount of individual that were involve and the need to inspect, track fund and paper work to truly determine if indeed fraud was a motive from the ones involved in this case. Out of the fourteen people that were indicted and charged with FEMA fraud only 10 pleaded guilty and were later sentenced to probation and ordered to return the money, three are awaiting trail and one Mr. Bellegarde was acquitted. Within the last few years the economy has not been great, which has put many people in a situation to commit different forms of finance fraud, the demand for a quality and skilled professorial forensics accountant has been at all-time high. Forensic accountants are trained in the ins and outs of fraud schemes. Being hired to do Jobs such as investigative work and provide recommendations to lessen the possibility of raud activities from occurring. With the combination of experiences, knowledge, and ethic value will allow for a forensic accountant to perform at advance level. Bibliography Elmore, D. R. (n. d. ). MDD Forensic Accountants . Avoid Awkward Joint Possessives

Avoid Awkward Joint Possessives Avoid Awkward Joint Possessives Avoid Awkward Joint Possessives By Maeve Maddox Sometimes the best way to deal with conundrums of jointly owned possessions is to retreat and rewrite, especially when one of the owners is represented by a pronoun. When the owners are named, the rule is straightforward enough: When two nouns are used to indicate common ownership, the sign of possession is placed after the second noun: â€Å"This is a picture of John and Mary’s house.† (two people own one house) When two nouns are used to show separate ownership, add the sign of possession to both nouns: â€Å"John’s and Mary’s cars are in the garage.† (two people, separate cars) These rules work with multiple owners, as long as they are all mentioned by name: â€Å"This is a picture of Sam and Jill and John and Mary’s time-share cottage.† (All four have joint ownership of the cottage.) â€Å"Sam’s, Jill’s, John’s, and Mary’s boats are tied to the dock.† (four separate owners of four separate boats) Once we try to replace a name with a pronoun/possessive adjective, however, things start getting uncomfortable. Refresher: Possessive adjectives are pronoun forms that indicate possession; they do not stand for nouns, but stand in front of nouns, like adjectives: my house /our house your house his house, her house, its house/ their house If we change â€Å"This is a picture of John and Mary’s house† to â€Å"This is a picture of John and her house,† we invite ambiguity. Is it a picture of a house belonging to John and Mary, or a picture of John standing by some woman’s house? The usual way an English speaker would get round the problem would be to say â€Å"This is a picture of John’s and her house.† But this would break the rule that reserves the mark of possession for the last partner in the joint construction, although few speakers would fret about it. It’s when pronouns replace both nouns in a joint possession that rewriting the sentence altogether is called for. The following examples were taken from the media: The Chancellor will talk about he and his wife’s relationship. The body was found in her car at she and Kidd’s home in Harrison. The first example is from TV. The use of he is completely out of the ballpark because he is a personal pronoun, not a possessive adjective. We don’t say, â€Å"he wife† or â€Å"he relationship.† The announcer could have avoided the problem by rephrasing the thought as â€Å"The Chancellor will talk about his relationship with his wife,† or â€Å"The Chancellor will talk about his marriage.† The second example is from a news item about a man named Kidd who was suspected of killing his wife. Kidd’s wife had a different surname, a fact that apparently bothered the editor who changed the reporter’s original copy from â€Å"The woman’s body was found in her car at their home in Harrison† to â€Å"The body was found in her car at she and Kidd’s home in Harrison.† As with the first example, a personal pronoun is being used in place of a possessive adjective. We can talk about â€Å"her home,† but not â€Å"she home.† Explaining joint possession can be tricky. Take time to rephrase. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
